Jesus said one thing; the Jews understood another.

“But he spake of the temple of his body” (John 2:21).

How could their misunderstanding have been prevented? By knowing Him better.

It strikes me this morning that the better I know Jesus, the better I will understand what He says.

I know His thoughts are far above my own. That, and my finite human mind, limit what I can understand of Jesus.

However, I am encouraged and blessed with the realization that the written Word He has given is “scaled down” that we might understand it.

No, it’s not an inferior Word. It’s a holy, eternal Word given for the benefit of mere mortals.

The key to understanding it better is knowing better the One who gave it.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).

Jesus, the living Word, first.

I want it that way in my life. I again affirm my choice.

Naturally, then, I want His written Word, the Bible, to be first in my life as well.

How could it be any other way?!

So I’ll continue doing my best to put my Scripture reading at the beginning of my day.

And more than that, I want to do my living by the Word first.

“According to the Scriptures, how should I be living now?”
