Hurt? Sad? Discouraged? Offended? Upset? Bitter? Proud?
It strikes me this morning that none of those come from God’s Spirit. (At least not most types of those.)
So why do I allow any of them to reside in my heart and roil my mind?
I want to have a right spirit!
A right spirit is clean, broken, and contrite.
“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise” (Psalm 51:17).
Clean — easy to aspire to.
Contrite — not so easy, but still “tolerable.”
Broken — well…
Look, there’s no other way to be the Son’s and have the Son. There’s no other way to have life and be in the light. There’s no other way to follow Jesus.
If I’m not broken before God, I’m only kidding myself about being a Christian.
Brokenness — how to avoid being despised by God.
