Is the Christian’s light supposed to shine on black Friday?
What Bible principles or concepts could guide us as we launch out into the pre-dawn darkness in twelve hours or less?
- Don’t push in front of others. “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves” (Philippians 2:3).
- Give up the good deal you got so someone else can have it. “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise” (Luke 6:31).
- Don’t go in the red by spending a bunch of green you don’t have. “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7).
- Look out for the other person. “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others” (Philippians 2:4).
- Remember the needy for good. “Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble” (Psalm 41:7).
- Keep your heart in the right place. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21).
- Show divine love to those around you. “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Galatians 5:14).
Wow! I just as well stay home! π―
And I didn’t even get to “be content” and “treasures in heaven” and “thou shalt not covet” and a few others.
Could it be that Gospel concepts and principles aren’t meant for black Friday? And that imagining such applicability ranges dangerously into pie-in-the-sky radicalness?
Come to think of it, I could let those principles guide me on the other 300+ non-Sunday, money-spending days of the year.
Or maybe not. What do you say?
PS: This pre-dates any portion of my life lived today. I’ve been thinking about this for a few days. Alas, I let it slide til it’s too late for this year. Oh, and lest you think otherwise, I’m not staying home from black Friday sales for any pious or noble or godly reasons. π³
I wonder with your thoughts; how you could stay home as there are so many people that could use those good deals that you could afford but donβt need
Interesting perspective, Virlin. π Thank you for reading and contributing!
