Resist myself?! 😯
If I do that, how shall I advance?
The truth seems so backward: Unless I resist my self, I shall not move forward.
I need to deny myself in various ways.
Early in the morning, I often ask God to help me reject these in my life:
- Self-promotion
- Self-justification
- Self-exaltation
- Self-righteousness
- Self-pity
- Self-indulgence
- Self-deception
- Self-absorption
- Self-flagellation
Actually, that last one is a fresh addition to my list. I need to remember it in my morning prayer times. Beating up on myself comes too easily. That’s not particularly noble. Nor spiritual. Nor godly. Nor healthful.
Self-denial. It’s an essential, defining part of being a Christian. Without it, we can’t.
“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Matthew 16:24).
